When I run a two hours workshop with the Safari kids

Every two weeks, in the summer, I  run felt workshops at a Brighton Language school, with children aged 5 to 11 years old,

I accompany them to create their own  needle felted cookie cutter shaped key-ring.

I lay down the wool ( that come in more than a hundred shades. and is 23 Microns 64’s Merino……) in the cookie cutter of their choice, and show them how to poke the wool with a very sharp special needle. The repetitive movement bind the fibres together until the piece is solid. Then they decorate their creation with more wool and at the end of the session I saw a metal chain key-ring to it.

I read somewhere that 23 Mic wool is very hard to felt, but I can assure you that by laying down the wool in a certain manner and enough stabbing will bind the fibres together…

It’s always a great pleasure to watch the children’s faces and all their being,  going in some sort of meditation while poking the wool and being creative…..!

To my surprise German children, Romanian, Russian kids are taught Felt making at home!!

It is a very rewarding technique and extremely satisfying.
